Solid research over the course of the last 60 years has demonstrated that psychotherapy works to relieve symptoms of many mental conditions including:
problems with attention and concentration in students,
substance abuse,
behavioral addictions,
several childhood or developmental disorders,
problems with mood, depression, or manic episodes,
dissociation,
recovery from traumatic events,
grief recovery,
anxiety,
post-traumatic stress,
eating disorders,
sleep problems,
anger,
gambling and other impulse control problems,
obsessive thought and compulive behavior patterns.
Even difficulties in managing emotions, or personality patterns that inhibit iinterpersonal functioning may be treated effectively. Sometimes a combination of medications and therapy work together to produce a stable long-lasting result. Family and couples therapy helps to re-organize unhealthy relationship patterns, resolve differences and allow people to live in committed, enduring and mutually supportive or satisfying relationships.
Given the benefits to individuals and their families, the stigma against mental or emotional difficulties among some cultures, families and individuals limits growth. Therapy works.
